Marketing is one of the most, if not the most important thing you can do to generate clients and revenue. Think about the year 1990. Before the 2000s there was no efficient way of reaching out to the general public other than radio and tv stations. This means that in order to be seen by a broad audience, you had to be either a big name or get into contact with major radio stations and TV studios. However, in this day and age, the internet has opened up many ways to present your message to your intended audience. Here are a few ways to market yourself in the decade of the 2020s:
- Social Media: Rather it’s Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, social media has made the biggest impact on society being one of the biggest platforms to this day.
-
-
- Instagram: Utilizing reels, posting on stories, using hashtags, posting website in bio, engaging in DM’s, buying advertisements.
- Facebook: Utilizing reels, posting on stories, using hashtags, posting website in bio, engaging in DM’s, buying advertisements.
- TikTok: Using hashtags, and engaging with other users.
- Twitter: Posting on stories
- I did not list Snapchat because of its private communication features.
-
- Websites: In the past, owning a website was voluntary, but in this day it’s mandatory for progress. I would recommend two website builders for those who are trying to start, WordPress and Squarespace. There are dozens of other website builders as well but these two are my recommendations.
- WordPress or Squarespace
-
- WordPress can be difficult but allows a ton of customization with HTML)
- Squarespace is very user-friendly and easy to use but has fewer customization opportunities.
-
- Pop-Up Booths: Word of mouth will always be important, so setting up a booth where people can come to you is also ideal. Here are a few things you could feature at your booth to represent your business:
-
-
- Business cards (important to have in general, we’ll talk more about that soon).
- A tablecloth (optional, but you want your setting to look nice).
- Poster Board
- Physical prints of your work (mainly for photographers).
- A laptop to show off your content (for photographers and videographers as well).
- Physical products for sale such as clothes, food, art, etc. (if you’re selling a physical item, be prepared to sell that item at your booth).
-
4. Business Cards: This is the quickest way to display your business to someone without having to say much. Design-wise, keep your business cards simple and neat. These cards are the first impression someone will receive when given the card. The second will be your website, which should be labeled on the cards.
5. Entrepreneurial Events: This is relatable to using word-of-mouth to market yourself. Approach these events with not only the intention of gaining new clients, but also networking and finding others who could benefit your business, and vice-versa with their business. Come to these events not trying to sell your business or products, but to sell yourself so that you can connect with others and build a genuine relationship.
